Recommendations

The recommendations contained in Transportation Outlook represent a culmination of four years of research and study to identify the transportation needs of the Akron metropolitan area. These recommendations help to ensure that the transportation system will continue to remain an efficient and reliable asset between now and 2040.

Highway Recommendations

The following are the Highway Recommendations of Transportation Outlook:

Establish highway preservation as the area’s highest priority

Improve safety conditions on highways to reduce crashes and fatalities

Improve highly congested corridors to reduce congestion

Increase flexibility in funding by considering unspecified operational improvements consistent with Transportation Outlook

Promote carpooling by continuing the Gohio Commute program

Work with AMATS Policy Committee to discuss ways for the region to manage residential and commercial development growth

54 projects have been identified, totaling over $814 million, intended to alleviate congestion, improve safety, and help preserve the system

Transit Recommendations

The following are the Public Transportation Recommendations of Transportation Outlook:

Preserve the existing transit systems

Coordination should be a high priority

Expand the current system with capital improvements to enhance service and attract additional ridership

Federal and state regulations should be revised to allow fuel tax revenue to be used for transit operational expenses like fuel and labor

Bikeway Recommendations

The following are the Bikeway Recommendations of Transportation Outlook:

Complete a network of regional trails

Invest in Pedestrian Facilities to improve connectivity and accessibility

When using AMATS funds for road projects, communities should consider adding bicycle and pedestrian facilities where appropriate

Bicycle and pedestrian facilities should be targeted in areas where land use and development promote frequent use
