AMATS enters new social circles

AMATS has stepped up its ongoing community outreach in the Greater Akron area with new pages on The Civic Commons, Facebook, Patch, Twitter, and YouTube.

“The world is becoming more interconnected so the days of our agency operating in an insular fashion are over.  Today’s technologies enable us to conduct transportation planning in an immediate, open manner, while empowering the public,” Planning Administrator Curtis Baker says.

Each of the agency’s new pages offers unique assets to AMATS as it guides the Greater Akron area’s transportation planning process.  Information about the agency’s pages is summarized below:

  • The Civic Commons – A new regional, non-profit civic organization, The Civic Commons strives to bring citizens and communities together through events, social media and other emerging technologies.  The Civic Commons’ site offers a unique public engagement utility that fosters dialogue among participants on many issues facing Northeast Ohio.
  • Facebook – AMATS’ Facebook page allows the agency to post info and photos about agency-related events and topics in a user-friendly format while providing the public a free, convenient forum for online conversation.
  • Patch – A community-specific news and information platform, Patch focuses on individual towns and communities.  The agency maintains a blog on sites dedicated to Cuyahoga Falls, Fairlawn-Bath, Kent, Stow and Twinsburg for posting the latest AMATS-oriented news, video feeds and information.
  • Twitter@AMATSPlanning is the agency’s new Twitter page, which offers social networking and microblogging services for followers of AMATS.  This page enables AMATS to “tweet” timely information quickly.
  • YouTubeAMATSPlanning is the agency’s channel on YouTube, the video-sharing website.  The agency has posted vidoes ranging from topics such as major improvement projects to its Connecting Communities Planning Grant Program.

“Over the last few years, we’ve had a presence on such pages as SummitCountyCalendar.com and ZEvents to promote our agency’s Citizens Involvement Committee,” Baker continues, “Those efforts will continue, but we felt that it was time to utilize the opportunities that social media presents for public dialogue.  We plan to include links to all of our pages, not only on our web site, but in other online media when feasible.”
